Water Contaminants Affect on Livestock
Nitrate Toxicity
Nitrates are used primarily in fertilizers, and are more likely to be found in water supplies near areas of concentrated agricultural activity. Nitrates in concentrated levels of 10 mg/L or higher are a serious concern for livestock producers. Cattle that drink water with high nitrate concentrations have shown a reduction in milk production, a reduction in reproductive efficiency, and in extreme cases, even death by suffocation.
Bacteria
E. coli, leptospirosis, salmonella, and other viruses and parasites have shown to cause a number of different symptoms and production losses in cattle. Calves are more susceptible to become ill by pathogens in water but an increased rate of miscarriages can also be a concern for mature animals.
